Hockey Goalie Mask
Ice hockey goalie masks, once a molded piece of fiberglass that was contoured to a players face, has evolved since 1959 into a far safer and more functional piece of goalie equipment. Popularized by the character Jason Voorhees, who wore a goalie mask that had been modeled from the mask of a Detroit Red Wings player, the now iconic older version became a staple in pop culture. However, it has since become much safer than the single piece that offered very little protection for the brave man standing in front of the net. Now the helmet and cage combination is far safer and more desirable for everyone involved, allowing ice hockey goalies to make more saves without having to worry about serious head and facial injuries resulting from them.
Due to the nature of the game and their positions, ice hockey goalies can be particular about their goalie masks. They want protection from those pucks that are sent towards them at very high speeds, but they also find it necessary to be able to see these same pucks, as well as the players that are aiming them. A hockey goalie mask includes the helmet, face mask, and throat guard, unlike the helmets of the other players on the ice hockey goalie’s team, who might wear a helmet without even the mask to protect them. If a beginning goalie was ever tempted to remove the mask for better visibility, however, professional players such as Dominik Hasek and Henrik Lundqvist would gladly set him straight, for these two players have intentionally used their heads to stop pucks in the past. This would not be possible without both a face mask and a throat guard.
Modern hockey masks have chrome cages that protect the faces of the goalies, while still allowing for the largest possible field of vision. The helmets are often made of fiberglass with vinyl lining designed to provide the most comfort possible during both practice and game-play. These innovations, which are very new when compared with the length of time goalies played ice hockey without even a mask to protect them, have been made possible by developments by companies like Bauer, Hackva, Reebok, and Vaughn. Companies with many years of experience making and perfecting hockey gear so that an ice hockey goalie can be at the top of his or her game whenever it is needed. That’s why they’re trusted by goalies everywhere, professional and amateur alike.
